Title of Challenge: point turn
A. Description (Short Paragraph):
The objective of this challenge is to make the group's robot go forward 25 centimeters, turn 180 degrees, then go back 10 centimeters. The robot will be programmed to do this.

This was the first challenge assigned, so the group encountered some difficulties trying to complete it. Though unfamiliar with NXT, the group was able to figure it out, and the challenge was a success. This was a fairly easy challenge with only three commands

Title of Challenge:Obstacle Course
A. Description (Short Paragraph):
The robot will go through an obstacle course that the Senegalese Jews created. It is supposed to be a beginners course. The robot can go out side the line but it needs to follow the course. This course includes 5 turns. A picture of the course is featured below.

The microphone represents the sound sensor, and the robot will move when a noise is made loud enough. The 2 in the corner represents that the sound sensor was plugged into port 2. All of the gears represent movement, and the A or the C represents the port. At the end, the sun represents the light sensor, and it was supposed to sense how light or dark the floor was, and it was supposed to stop on black at the end. The 1 shows that it is in port 1.

The obstacle course was difficult because there were five different turns and many different lengths, and it had to be tested each time a new part of the program was put on. The easiest way to complete the course was to test it often.







5. DATE: 5/20/2008


Task 1 (10 points): At your work area on the table come up with a strategy to calculate the velocity of your robot at 30% power over 70 cm. Repeat the measurement 3 times and get an average. Think about the equation for velocity. Carry out your plan and determine the velocity.

The average velocity of the 3 tests of the robot that went 70 centimeters at 30% power is 9.1 cm/s. The challenge was fairly easy. All that needed to be done was to make the robot advance 70 centimeters foward at a power of 30% and to take the average velocity of the three tests. The challenge was solved by taking the length of the course divided by the circumferance of the wheel. This gave the group the number of rotations needed to be used: 4.


b. Description of what made this task difficult for your group.
The group met difficulties by calculating the number of rotations. They also encountered difficulty because it was hard to start and stop the stopwatch at the exact time.

Task 2 (20 points):: At your work area, come up with a strategy to get your robot to accelerate over a 1 meter distance. Have it come to a stop at 1 meter.

In this challenge the robot was supposed to accelerate over a distance of one meter. The challenge was solved by having the robot travel at 50 percent, then 75 percent, then 100 percent. The group had to estimate how many rotations each percent level there was needed to go one meter.



b. Description of what made this task difficult for your group.

It was hard because the circumferance of the wheels did not evenly go into 100 centimeters or one whole meter. The group had to estimate and they luckily got it right on thier first try.

Task 3 (30 points):: Determine the velocity of the rotation of the wheels on your robot. Program your robot at 45% power to rotate 10 times. Calculate the velocity of the rotation of the wheels at this power in cm/sec. (Hint: You need to know the circumference of a wheel and remember it goes around ten times!)

Task 4 (40 points):: On a graph, plot the velocity that your robot travels 1 meter at 20% power, 40% power, and 70% power. Include an image of your plot in your documentation by snipping it. Make sure it has units and axis labels. Using your graph, determine how fast you think your robot wold be traveling if you programmed it to go at 60% power. Calculate velocity in cm/sec.

Task 5 (50 points):: Create an obstacle course on your lab table with building bocks. It should contain one right point turn and 1 left point turn. The robot should stop at the end where you have built a small tower of blocks. Your robot should not knock the blocks over.
